Farmers Urged to Get Registered

first_imgFacebookTwitterWhatsAppEmail Commissioner of Police, Owen Ellington, is calling on all farmers to get registered, noting that this is one of the most effective ways to ensure the success of the Agricultural Produce Receipt Book Programme. “I want to appeal to every Jamaican farmer to get registered and get your receipt books,” he implored. The Commissioner was speaking on Tuesday (February 28) at the re-launch of the programme at the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries’ Hope Gardens offices in St. Andrew. He said that many farmers often resist the process of registration as they believe it is a taxation measure. He noted, however, that this is one of the most effective methods to fight praedial larceny. Commissioner Ellington said he is willing to open up the police stations across Jamaica as registration centres to ensure the full registration of all farmers. “(The Ministry of Agriculture) can leave the forms there and the farmers can come and be registered and we can turn them (the forms) over to the relevant agency,” he noted. The Agricultural Produce Receipt Book Programme was re-launched in an effort to curb the nagging problem of praedial larceny. It seeks to ensure that all farmers registered with the Rural Agricultural Development Authority (RADA), and vendors, are able to issue a receipt, identifiable by a unique number, to anyone who purchases agricultural produce, as proof of payment.  The receipt book project is part of the Praedial Larceny Prevention Programme’s four-tiered plan to address the longstanding problem. The other components are: employment of a praedial larceny prevention coordinator; strengthening collaboration among farmers, police, parish councils, the Jamaica Agricultural Society (JAS) and communities; and publicising the initiatives. The Ministry of Agriculture has collaborated with various agencies and organisations in the public and private sectors to effectively implement the programme, including the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF), farmers’ groups and communities. Commissioner Ellington further encouraged farmers to write their telephone numbers on the receipts that are issued to consumers. “My officers are now calling the farmers to ask them if they sold produce to individuals they see on the road, so if I stop you with a car load of agricultural produce and you tell me that you bought it from (a particular farmer) and you produce a receipt, I will be able to contact the farmer. This has been very effective in curtailing praedial larceny,” he said. A New Focus on the ‘Post’ in Post-Traumatic Stress

first_imgThe New York Times: Psychological trauma dims tens of millions of lives around the world and helps create costs of at least $42 billion a year in the United States alone. But what is trauma, exactly? Both culturally and medically, we have long seen it as arising from a single, identifiable disruption. You witness a shattering event, or fall victim to it — and as the poet Walter de la Mare put it, “the human brain works slowly: first the blow, hours afterward the bruise.” The world returns more or less to normal, but you do not.In 1980, the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders defined trauma as “a recognizable stressor that would evoke significant symptoms of distress in almost everyone” — universally toxic, like a poison. But it turns out that most trauma victims — even survivors of combat, torture or concentration camps — rebound to live full, normal lives. That has given rise to a more nuanced view of trauma — less a poison than an infectious agent, a challenge that most people overcome but that may defeat those weakened by past traumas, genetics or other factors.Read the whole story: The New York Times More of our Members in the Media >last_img read more

Our Need to Make And Enforce Rules Starts Very Young

first_imgThe Wall Street Journal:Hundreds of social conventions govern our lives: Forks go on the left, red means stop and don’t, for heaven’s sake, blow bubbles in your milk. Such rules may sometimes seem trivial or arbitrary. But our ability to construct them and our expectation that everyone should follow them are core mechanisms of human culture, law and morality. Rules help turn a gang of individuals into a functioning community.…In a clever 2008 study, the psychologists Hannes Rakoczy, Felix Warneken and Michael Tomasello showed systematically how sensitive very young children are to rules. The experimenter told 3-year-olds, “This is my game, I’m going to dax” and then showed them an arbitrary action performed on an object, like pushing a block across a board with a stick until it fell into a gutter. Next, the experimenter “accidentally” performed another arbitrary action, like lifting the board until the block fell in the gutter, and said, “Oh no!”Read the whole story: The Wall Street Journal More of our Members in the Media >last_img read more

Research yields insight into the mystery of smell

first_imgResearchers at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine have uncovered the mechanism underlying a phenomenon in how we smell that has puzzled researchers for decades. In an article appearing online today in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, the team reports that, surprisingly, the mechanism follows a simple physics principle called cooperativity.Inhalation of a scent sends a complex mixture of odor molecules swirling toward the back of the nose, where they bind to specialized receptors that are located on millions of olfactory neurons. Activation of these receptors sends signals from the olfactory neurons to the brain, where the smell is deciphered.Individual neurons have only a single type of receptor and, therefore, recognize only specific odor molecules. However, the hundreds of different types of olfactory receptors are found, or expressed, in approximately equal numbers across the entire population of neurons, which allows a person to detect a wide variety of smells, explained senior investigator Jianhua Xing, Ph.D., associate professor of computational and systems biology, Pitt School of Medicine. Richard Axel, Columbia University, and Linda Buck, now at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, received the 2004 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for discovering the receptors and making these observations. LinkedIn Pinterest Email Sharecenter_img Share on Twitter Share on Facebook “Over the past decades, neuroscientists have been trying to uncover how nature accomplishes these two goals: selecting one, and only one, type of olfactory receptor for each neuron, while at the same time ensuring that all receptor types are represented in the whole population of neurons,” said Dr. Xing. The mysteries of how we smell have generated many experimental observations about how olfactory receptors actually work. In the new study, Dr. Xing and colleagues used these existing experimental data to create a computational model of how olfactory receptor expression can be both uniform across a single neuron, yet very diverse across the entire population of neurons. They then used this model to correctly predict several additional findings that have been demonstrated by other research groups, demonstrating that their model is valid.Surprisingly, the model suggested a three-pronged regulation of olfactory receptor gene expression that follows a basic physics principle called cooperativity, in which elements in a system influence the behavior of one another rather than function independently. Cooperativity can explain many phenomena, such as the transition between liquid and vapor states, why oil and water do not mix, and even other biological processes such as how a protein folds.“We are amazed that nature has solved the seemingly daunting engineering process of olfactory receptor expression in such a simple way,” said Dr. Xing. The findings pave the way for new predictions about how olfactory receptors function that can be tested in future experiments, the results of which will help the team refine their model and make even more predictions.last_img read more

SCT&E LNG attends WGC in Paris

first_imgSCT&E LNG, developer of a $9.25 billion LNG export project in the U.S., said its representatives returned from France where the company attended the World Gas Conference in Paris.Exhibiting for the first time at the conference, SCT&E LNG Chairman Greg Michaels explained the current state and future role of LNG and promoted the benefits of U.S. natural gas, the company said in a statement on Thursday.“The energy industry is undergoing a revolution without precedent. We believe liquefied natural gas is the fuel choice of the future with the greatest potential for growth worldwide,” Michaels said.“Growing economies are faced with the great challenge of fueling development in an environmentally sustainable way. LNG is a powerful solution to this challenge and can provide these countries with a clean-burning, more affordable fuel source.” SCT&E LNG recently announced that it signed a memorandum of understanding with a sizable U.S. upstream natural gas supplier for its LNG project on Monkey Island, Cameron Parish, Louisiana. The agreement provides enough natural gas to enable the company to produce at least 4 million tons per annum of the chilled gas.“An added component to what makes SCT&E LNG different than other LNG companies is that we now offer a fixed, low-price, and long-term option for our upstream natural gas,” Michaels concluded.last_img read more

Photo by Mike WeaverLEXINGTON, Ky. – After signing hundreds of autographs at Fan Day, the Kentucky football team let those same folks peek behind the curtain and watch their second practice of the preseason Saturday. There were no pads, so no real hitting, but it was nevertheless an informative first look for fans and media at the 2015 Wildcats. The biggest takeaway for casual observers: UK is starting to look a lot more like a team ready to compete in the mighty Southeastern Conference.“We’re getting there with some of our length, some of our size,” coach Mark Stoops said. “But you know across the board we’re not there yet. And some of this size and some of this length is very young.”So who actually looks like they’re ready to play and how is the real depth chart shaking out so far in camp? Those and other observations from Saturday’s practice:Trinity alum Hatcher suspended at UK* With projected starting right tackle Kyle Meadows out of practice after staying up all night with a migraine, the first-string line Saturday was (from left to right): senior Jordan Swindle, senior Zach West, junior Jon Toth, sophomore Ramsey Meyers and, most notably, true freshman George Asafo-Adjei. The second-string line for the day was (from left to right): sophomore Nick Haynes, redshirt freshman Jervontius “Bunchy” Stallings, junior Zach Myers, redshirt freshman Jarrett LaRubbio and sophomore Cole Mosier.* Junior Patrick Towles worked with the first-strong offense today, although, he and challenger Drew Barker, a redshirt freshman, were both hit and miss most of the morning. Sophomore running back Stanley “Boom” Williams (who looks much bigger than last year) and sophomore receivers Jeff Badet, Blake Bone and Garrett Johnson were the primary first-string skill guys, along with true freshman C.J. Conrad (who is moving well after hernia surgery) and redshirt freshman Daryl Long at tight end.* With projected starting strongside linebacker Jason Hatcher suspended the first two games – and although he is still practicing with the team in the meantime – here was the first-string defense when 11-on-11 drills started: sophomore Regie Meant, seniors Farrington Huguenin and Melvin Lewis on the line, seniors Josh Forrest and Ryan Flannigan at inside linebacker, redshirt freshman Denzil Ware and senior Jabari Johnson at outside linebacker, senior A.J. Stamps and junior Marcus McWilson at safety and seniors Cody Quinn and Fred Tiller at corner.Sign up to get more like this free in your inbox Note that 8 of 11 are seniors. (Defensive backs Blake McClain, Kendall Randolph and Chris Westry – a junior, sophomore and true freshman, respectively – worked in with the first team at times, too.)* The initial second-string defensive unit in 11-on-11 was: redshirt freshman Adrian Middleton, sophomore Matt Elam and senior C.J. Johnson on the line, senior Khalid Henderson and redshirt freshman Dorian Hendrix at inside linebacker, junior Alvonte Bell (JUCO transfer) and true freshman Kengera Daniel (early enrollee) at outside linebacker, redshirt freshmen Mike Edwards and Darius West at safety and Randolph and Westry at corner. (Junior J.D. Harmon got time at corner as well.)* So how did the QBs look? Towles hit Bone, tightly covered by Quinn, with a strike over the middle in one-on-one drills, then Barker dropped a bomb over the top of West that hit receiver Ryan Timmons in stride. Position coach Tommy Mainord said the junior Timmons, who had ankle and shoulder surgeries in the offseason, looks fresh and explosive so far in camp.Barker later rifled a completion to redshirt freshman Thaddeus Snodgrass, who caught it despite being blanketed and looks much-improved. Towles answered with a well-timed and high-velocity completion to the sideline on an out route. Then the defense took a turn.Stamps locked down receiver Alex Montgomery, running stride for stride to deny him the ball. Freshmen Westry and Derrick Baity (towering corners who will almost certainly play this fall) made consecutive breakups. Randolph jumped a route and batted down the pass. Stoops, who is taking a more hands-on approach to coaching the secondary this season, stood in the backfield and barked critiques and praises after every play.Sullivan | Dogged by issues, Barker matures* Although he’s suspended for the first two games, Hatcher looked great in one-on-one drills for offensive and defensive linemen/linebackers. He blew by Asafo-Adjei twice and beat Mosier two other times, once with a slick spin move. In a battle of starters, Swindle looked impressive in two reps against Huguenin, thwarting him every which way he tried to get around. Haynes (308 pounds) was less successful against walk-on linebacker Elijah Barnett (220 pounds), son of former UK player Oliver Barnett, who twice got by him.* Badet is really, really, really (really, really) fast. After practice today, pretty much everyone agreed that the title of UK’s Fastest Man belongs to either Badet or Boom – and they’re apparently trying to work out a race to settle that. Badet caught a short pass over the middle in 11-on-11 Saturday and was gone, running away from the entire defense in a blink. Coordinator Shannon Dawson said that’s the second time in as many days he’s done it. “He can fly,” Mainord said.* The biggest takeaway is these Cats pass the eyeball test more than any UK team in recent memory. Running back Mikel Horton and receiver Dorian Baker, both sophomores, will be two of the most physically imposing players at their positions in the entire Southeastern Conference. The size upgrade at corner is staggering in person, and Westry will make an impact this fall. Freshman Marcus Walker looks like a veteran SEC safety. The trouble is, every team in the league has guys like that – at every position – so whether the influx of size and talent translates to more wins this fall remains to be seen. But the Wildcats at least appear to be inching closer to leveling the playing field.Kyle Tucker can be reached at (502) 582-4361. Follow him on Twitter @KyleTucker_CJ.last_img read more
