O’Shea backs Man Utd to appoint Solskjaer permanentlyby Freddie Taylor10 months agoSend to a friendShare the loveFormer Manchester United star John O’Shea has backed Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to remain as manager beyond this season. The Norwegian will be caretaker boss until the end of the season after replacing Jose Mourinho. But after four wins from his first four games, O’Shea thinks his former teammate could take over permanently.”Why not?” O’Shea replied when asked if Solskjaer could be permanent United manager. “If he carries on the run in the league, he will be a front runner for the job that’s for sure. “Rightly so, he will talk about the next game, and won’t look too far ahead. He has been brought in until the summer, but that can all change very quickly.” TagsTransfersAbout the authorFreddie TaylorShare the loveHave your say

We’ve had some great goalkeepers and he’s challenging Edwin and Peter for the No 1 spot historically.“He had one (brilliant game) against Arsenal last year. He should’ve held a few of them! One or two fantastic saves and the rest of it was about concentration. “Team spirit is the first thing. Second is we can defend. (Phil) Jones and Victor (Lindelof) were fantastic. We’ve got the best goalkeeper in the world. We’ve got blistering pace. It’s a fantastic goal – it’s hard to do that, you know. It’s a well-struck finish.”

He is on the bench at Everton for quite a while. “This isn’t a cool situation for us. We want him to play. But unfortunately, that’s not been the case for him at the moment. Hopefully, he will solve his situation soon.”Since making the move to Goodison Park in January 2018, the striker has scored nine goals in 45 appearances in all competitions.

UPDATE: Antuna starts with Pizarro not fit to make XITata Martino’s first official game as Mexico manager is finally here. The Argentine, who took over El Tri in January, has overseen four friendly matches. All of them have been victories. Now, he turns his attention to a Cuba team Mexico has beaten in every meeting since a Pan American Games in the 1970s. Every official match has been won by El Tri. Article continues below Editors’ Picks ‘There is no creativity’ – Can Solskjaer get Man Utd scoring freely again? ‘Everyone legged it on to the pitch!’ – How Foden went from Man City superfan to future superstar Emery out of jail – for now – as brilliant Pepe papers over Arsenal’s cracks What is Manchester United’s ownership situation and how would Kevin Glazer’s sale of shares affect the club? That said, it’s a chance for Martino to get his best XI playing well together and building chemistry. Unfortunately for him, he has to cope with a number of injuries suffered in the last week, adding to an already depleted roster. As we do before each Mexico match, Goal has put together three potential starting line-ups for Mexico. Check back an hour before kick-off to see which one Martino has elected to deploy.Probable Mexico XIThis is by far the most likely line-up for Martino to use both against Cuba and during the Gold Cup as a whole. There will be changes – notably if Hector Moreno and Edson Alvarez return to full fitness by the knockout stages as they’ll likely slot in at left center-back and central midfield. Jonathan dos Santos, who picked up an ankle knock, won’t start. That means Monterrey midfielder Carlos Rodriguez should come in. Jesus Gallardo and Luis ‘Chaka’ Rodriguez are attacking full-backs who get forward well. That’s something Martino’s system demands. Gallardo in particular causes a lot of problems on the left combining with Monterrey team-mate Rodolfo PIzarro. On the left side of central midfield, Andres Guardado should get a go in his most comfortable position. The captain is the leader of the team on and off the field and helps both the left-sided attack and the central midfield area. That’s good news because converted center-back Diego Reyes hasn’t always looked his best in that position. With injuries, however, it’s where he’ll need to be.Raul Jimenez is locked in as the No.9 after the Wolves forward was the only player to start both warm-up friendly matches. Roberto Alvarado will line up next to him.Guillermo Ochoa is the No.1 for the tournament, though he may get a rest during the group stage.Pizarro out?In addition to Alvarez, Dos Santos and Moreno, there could be another injury absence Saturday night. Monterrey attacker Rodolfo Pizarro isn’t at 100 percent because of an ankle knock. If that happens, Martino’s options for wingers are limited. He has Uriel Antuna, the LA Galaxy player he attempted to cut from the original roster before including once again because of injury. He also has Orbelin Pineda. El Tri fans will be hoping the dynamic Pizarro is good to go at least for the first hour or so before exiting with a big lead.Taking it easyIf, for some reason, Martino feels he can’t risk his best line-up against Cuba, he may roll out something like this. Carlos Salcedo came into the summer carrying a knee injury and could be replaced by Cesar Montes. Andres Guardado, who didn’t start the friendly against Venezuela but did come in and score, is another candidate for extra rest with Erick Gutierrez able to fill the same role.Martino doesn’t seem to be too concerned about his top players taking knocks, even as more and more keep being added to the injury list. The field at the Rose Bowl is generally excellent, and Martino will want to get the Gold Cup rolling on the right foot.
Hirving Lozano may be on the move this summer, but he will not be making his way to Everton according to Toffees scout Carlo Jacomuzzi. The Mexico international is seeing his future at PSV called into question. The 23-year-old forward is considered to be ready for a new challenge after two years in the Netherlands. He is currently nursing a knock that has ruled him out of the 2019 Gold Cup, but is still generating plenty of transfer talk.A switch to the Premier League has been mooted, with a number of clubs in England said to be keen on the talented winger. And while Everton have cast admiring glances in his direction of late, the Toffees have switched focus this summer and are not expected to join the scramble for Lozano’s signature.Jacomuzzi told Radio Marte: “Lozano to Everton? That was discussed last year because he knows the director.“Their scouts told him [director of football, Marcel Brands] to take him in the past, but the current rumours could be a move by his agent.“As far as I know, Everton are looking at other players.”Brands has already sought to distance the Toffees from links to Lozano. He recently told reporters: “That [players being linked] always happens during this period.“I read about [David] Neres, I read about Lozano. You name them, but we have no contact with these players.”Everton are in the market for reinforcements this summer, even if Lozano may not be on their wish list. They are having to tread carefully, though, with an acceptance on their part that they need to invest wisely, rather than merely throwing big money around.Brands added: “The fact that you can spend money means that you have to be much more careful.“If you make a mistake here, you will hardly be able to get rid of them. “Players earn a lot of money and there are not many clubs that can handle such salaries or transfer fees.”
GLENDALE, AZ – JANUARY 01: Head coach Urban Meyer of the Ohio State Buckeyes on the sidelines during the BattleFrog Fiesta Bowl against the Notre Dame Fighting Irish at University of Phoenix Stadium on January 1, 2016 in Glendale, Arizona. (Photo by Christian Petersen/Getty Images)The Urban Meyer-Zach Smith-Ohio State saga appeared to wrap up last week, as the Buckeyes announced a suspension for the head coach and the school’s athletic director, Gene Smith. It might not be all the way over, though.Ohio State’s 23-page report on the investigation into Meyer and his handling of domestic violence allegations against Smith revealed that text messages older than a year had been deleted on the Buckeyes’ head coach’s phone. The Associated Press is now reporting that there might be questions around the legality of this move by Meyer. From the report:Any attempt by Ohio State coach Urban Meyer to eliminate work-related text messages on his university-issued phone to hide information would be illegal, open records experts said following a two-week investigation into his handling of domestic violence allegations against an assistant coach.Ohio State suspended Meyer for three games after investigators concluded he mishandled Zach Smith’s repeated professional and behavioral problems and instead protected his protege for years through domestic violence allegations, a drug problem and poor job performance. Among the many questions raised by the investigation into the highly successful coach of the fifth-ranked Buckeyes was how he responded when the story broke. The investigation, though, was unable to prove if Meyer did this directly as a result to any breaking news stories.Regardless, it feels like this saga is far from over. Stay tuned.

ESPN college football analyst Desmond Howard did not hold back when speaking about a former Michigan football coach today. The College GameDay analyst was asked about Jim Harbaugh and his job with the Wolverines. While it might be a disappointing start for some, it’s much better than what Michigan has dealt with in previous years. For example: Rich Rodriguez.Howard, who starred at Michigan, was brutally honest when speaking about Rodriguez and his time with the Wolverines.“Rich Rodriguez set the program back 8-10 years,” he said.Desmond Howard reiterates what he told us yesterday: “Rich Rodriguez set the program back 8-10 years.”— Brad Galli (@BradGalli) October 13, 2018That’s harsh, but it’s tough to argue against it.Rodriguez went 15-22 in three seasons at Michigan, going 3-9, 5-7 and then 7-6 in his final season.Michigan and Wisconsin are set to kick off at 7:30 p.m. E.T. on ABC.
